Angel Cottage was founded in 2005 to provide a home for orphans and deaf students who attend Humble Hearts. Many of these children were walking miles each day to arrive at school. Walking through the traffic was extremely dangerous for them, but they were thrilled to a attend a school were they are understood. Deafness is very misunderstood in Kenya, and without a school like Humble Hearts, these children were not receiving an education and were unable to communicate with their families and friends. Angel Cottage provides these children with a home where they are understood and can receive help needed with school work. It provides them a safe environment to live and attend school, as well as a home with 3 meals a day and loving care-givers who meet their other daily needs. Those who have families return home when school is on break to spend time with their family. The school also works to help the parents understand the chidlren's needs and better care for these special children.
It isn't enough
Angel Cottage was established to provide a home for 25 children. As the school has grown, and more deaf children and orphans have arrived, the home has quickly outgrown its original capacity. Angel Cottage is now home to 37 children with many more in need. Due to the lack of space, bedrooms are very crowded with children sleeping 3 to a bed in some cases. Other children have had to be turned away due to the over crowding situation and are unable to attend school because they simply live too far away.
It needs to be better
Children shouldn't have to come home and bail water from the house after school. During the rainy season in Nairobi this is exactly what the students that live at Angel Cottage have to do. The city did not allow improvements to be made for drainage around the current angel cottage. It is a building made out of sheet metal and prone to leak. Children need a home they can return to after school and study and play. They need light to study in the evenings, running water to wash their hands and for bathing, and room for enough beds to sleep comfortably.
Hope for the future
In 2006, land was purchased for a new Angel Cottage home and designs were drawn. This new home will be able to comfortablly provide for 80 children. It will have full time house mothers for the children who are fluent in Kenyan Sign Language so they can communicate with the children and understand all their needs. For many children, this is the key to unlocking their future. Currently trapped in a society that does not understand or value them, this home is their opportunity to receive an education previously only be dreamed about. The new Angel Cottage will provide an additional 44 children with a family environment, and the opportunity to learn and grow into self-suffient adults
These children need your help to make these dreams come true. Construction was started in 2007, but a drastic increase in construction costs and the falling value of the dollar as prevented this home from becoming a reality. A new Angel Cottage must bec completed for these remarkable children.
